Student Curatorial Project 8:
Changing Landscapes: Themes in Nineteenth-Century French and American Painting
September 29 – November 13, 2011
PLEASE NOTE SPECIAL DATE FOR EXHIBIT RECEPTION:
THURSDAY, OCTOBER 6, 5 – 8 PM
The eighth in a continuing series of Student Curatorial Projects features nineteenth-century French and American paintings and prints from the University of Denver Art Collections, supplemented by loans from private collections. A coordinated display of several related paintings and drawings takes place at the Denver Art Museum. Changing Landscapes features a little-known work by Camille Corot and a late Albert Bierstadt landscape donated in 1890 to the University. The rising regard for landscape painting in the late 19th century was associated with a deep curiosity for simple country living, seen as an escape from urban life by the artists. The newly popular landscape genre promoted new ideas and visions, as observed directly in the open air. Many artists also looked to landscape as an expression of national or regional identities. Student Curatorial Projects receive generous support from the JFM Foundation. With catalog and a symposium featuring leading experts in the field [date TBA].
Student Curatorial Project 9: Selections from the University of Denver Art Collections
Special opening reception: Early December, 2011 [TBD]; exhibition continues indefinitely
Renaissance Rooms, Mary Reed Hall, University of Denver.
The ninth student curatorial project in the Student Curatorial Projects series will continue the restoration of DU’s historic Renaissance Rooms—originally the main reading room of the University’s library, once housed in the1932 Mary Reed Building. The collegiate gothic space now serves as the principal reception space and board room of the University, and its double-height spaces provide the venue for a selection of works by a number of Colorado’s most important artists, many of whom were faculty of the School of Art& Art History. Highlights include fine marbles by Preston Powers, sculptural relief work by Arnold Rönnebeck, recent major acquisitions by painter Vance Kirkland, large-scale paintings by Mel Strawn, and many others. Although the space is normally closed to the public, the special opening reception will provide a unique glimpse of Colorado’s art history in this beautifully restored space. Printed and multimedia interpretive materials, prepared by students in DU’s Curatorial Practicum, accompany the project.
Faculty Triennial
January 19 – March 11, 2012
Opening Event: Thursday, January 19
The Myhren Gallery presents a sampling of current work by all the faculty of the School of Art & Art History. The Faculty Triennial exposes aspects of the rich dialogs in contemporary art. Themes such as the art/science interface, gender issues, and the impact of digital innovations will be explored both in historical and truly contemporary perspectives. The accompanying publication provides a cross-section of these important themes and a snapshot of current practice among the members of the SAAH faculty. The Faculty Triennial continues the efforts of the Myhren Gallery both to document and to stimulate Colorado’s art history.
Four by Four: Collector Series
April 5 – May 6, 2012
Reception: Thursday, April 5, 5 – 8 pm
In recent years, the Myhren Gallery has developed strong relationships with a number of major private art collectors, often exploring their collections in dedicated exhibitions. Examples have included several projects drawn from the Vicki and Kent Logan Collection, Vail; the Jan Perry Mayer Collection, and the Sarah and Jim Taylor Collection. Reflecting the growing spirit of collaboration in the regional art community, Four by Four will bring together works from four important contemporary art collections, each of which will contribute works by four living artists. Student participation in the project, arranged via the School of Art & Art History’s Curatorial Practicum, will include coordination of several site-specific installations, both in the Gallery and elsewhere in Denver; this will constitute Student Curatorial Project 10. A symposium will bring together artists, collectors and scholars in an overview of Denver’s contemporary art world.
